Mr. Young oversaw news operations at television stations in 26 markets throughout 22 states, including the Hearst-Argyle Washington, D.C., bureau. In March, the station group won a prestigious Peabody Award in recognition of election coverage initiatives championed by Mr. Young beginning in 2000.
Mr. Young served for 25 years at WTAE-TV as vice president and general manager, news director and other news management positions. He joined Hearst Broadcasting in 1962. He is a graduate of Duquesne University.
Under Mr. Young’s leadership, Hearst-Argyle stations have received many of television’s highest awards for excellence in journalism, including the Edward R. Murrow Award, the Peabody, the duPont-Columbia Journalism Award, the National Headliner Award, the Emmy and the National Association of Broadcasters Service to America Award.
Mr. Young was honored last month with the Radio-Television News Directors Association’s Paul White Award, which recognizes an individual’s lifetime contribution to electronic journalism.
