The C.A. Lenderman Clock Co. is a small clock factory located in East Texas on US highway 59 two miles north of the city of Diboll, about 100 miles north of Houston. It is a family owned business operated by Jane and Charles Lenderman.

Our goal is to produce a strong reliable banjo clock movement at a reasonable price. We incorporate old proven technology with modern materials and procedures to manufacture a clock which can be passed from generation to generation.

The C.A. Lenderman movement is a modern copy of a Willard. It has Willard style hands, and is an ideal movement for a Willard style banjo case. The weight driven movement is of recoil escapement design having a running time up to 8 days, depending on case depth. The pendulum beats at 78 beats per minute with a length of 23 inches from the hand shaft to the tip of the bob spike.

Many of the operations are carried out on automatic machines over 100 years old. We start with 3' x 8' sheets of brass that are sheared into strips. Gear blanks are punched out on a 1918 model Bliss punch press. We use a 1940 model South Bend 10" tool room lathe for many machining operations and tool making. The gear teeth and pinions are cut on Simplex (1940 model Swiss made) automatic gear cutting machines using constant profile cutters. The teeth are cut on 10 to 15 wheel blanks at a time.

12 foot rods of brass and steel are fed through a Cleveland automatic turning lathe patented in 1885. This lathe makes all the round parts such as pillar post, minute tubes, hour tubes, pinions, cranks, etc. There are approximately 350 operations, 65 machine tools, and 12 machines used in making these movements. We designed and built a rose lathe to decorate the pendulum bobs. We use a gas fired furnace to cast weights and pendulum bobs. Verges are case-hardened in an electric furnace. After the parts are made on the machines we hand assemble and adjust these into finished movements. There is a lot of hands on work involved in making these movements

The plates are 2 5/8" wide x 4" high x 1/8" thick. The plates and wheels are made from half hard brass. The pinion holes are provided with oil sinks. The pinions and arbors are made from stress proof steel. The verges are made from case hardened steel. The impulse faces are hand lapped to mirror finish. The brass faced pendulum bob weighs 1 pound and the driving weight weighs approximately 7 pounds. The clocks come complete with hands, weight, pulley, cable, and crank. The pulley and cable are assembled on the movement, ready to hang the weight. The clocks are shipped in wooden crates which measure 20" x 6" x 6" and weigh approximately 15 pounds.

Please feel free to call or write us. We will be more than happy to answer any questions about the movements or clock factory. If you are ever in East Texas, feel welcome to stop by and visit with us.
