William John Hays, Jr. is the son of William John Hays, Sr. who was born in Ireland, married Martha Unknown and both died in Ireland. This is all we know, except their 3 sons, Frederick, William John and Robert Hay came to America in 1854.
William John Hays Jr.(1805-1892) married in Milford, Dunfanaghy, Ireland, Joanna
Alcorn b.1808 in the Rosses Area Ireland and died in Cowansville, PA. They came to
this country on the ship Choas and landed on 6-5-1854. They settled in Madison Twp.,
Armstrong Co., PA. He was a farmer and ran a distillery. William and Joanna had one
child:
After Joanna died, William married secondly Letitia Ann Morrow b.xxxx d.7/1866. William and Letitia had 6 children. He came to this country with his two brothers,
Robert Hays (1818-1892) m. Margaret Alcorn (1806-1899) and Fred Hays who m. Martha McKinley.William John Hay, Jr. spent one night in the Kittanning Jail during the Civil War. He had been reported for making whiskey in his still. As the story goes, his having two sons in the Civil War, William and Robert, had something to do with his being released and having the right make his own personal beverage. While he was in jail, a group of his friends went there and held a party for him. In Ireland, he had been a teacher and dance master. He was short in stature and wore a full beard of red in addition to his red hair.
