The American Eskimo Dog

The American Eskimo, nicknamed Eskie, is said to be the most beautiful dog of all the breeds of dogs. Descendents of the White German spitz, originated in Germany. The white German spitz came to America in the late 1600's.

The United Kennel Club began to register the American Eskimo in 1913. It took 4 more years for the UKC to adopt the name, American Eskimo. In the last 30 years, the American Eskimo has grown in popularity and numbers to become one of the most popular breeds in the country today.

In 1985, The American Eskimo Dog Association was formed for the purpose of the American Kennel Club recognition of the breed. Ten years later, the American Eskimo was fully recognised by the American Kennel Club in July of 1995.

The American Eskimo is most widely known for its performances in the Barnum and Bailey Circus. Their superior intelligence has proven the Eskie to excel in the Obedience ring. They are able to master tricks and training quickly.

American Eskimos are people oriented dogs and you will find yourself dealing with them as if they were human. They are like children, always wanting love. They have an uncanning ability to understand not only your tone of voice, but what you say. While the Eskie loves all members of the family, it is not unusual for them to single out one member of the family as their favorite. They will follow that person wherever they should go, and they feel that they are this member's private guardian.

Care and Grooming

Caring for the Eskie is quite simple and easier than most people think, being an all white, long hair dog. The Eskie can play outside in the rain and mud and when dry, the dirt will come off when they shake. This is due to the natural oil that repels soiling. They also do not have the odor problems that many of the long hair breeds have. There is little or no odor at all.

The Eskie males shed their coat once a year, in the spring when " They blow their coats". By brushing regularly during this time, it will reduce the shedding. Females will shed a second time, which is usually 2 to 3 months after their heat cycle.

Health

The American Eskimo has excellent health as a breed. Hip dysphasia is pretty much unheard of and various other diseases and defts that effect many breeds are not prominent in the American Eskimos. On any American Eskimo or any other breed make sure you have a written guarantee on the dog for health problems. Please take your Eskie to your local vet and have him or her checked. The Eskie lives an average of 15 years. And in those years, they bring a lot of love and joy.

Sizes

The American Eskimo comes in three sizes (Toy, Miniature, and Standard) as recognized by the American Kennel Club. The United Kennel Club recognizes only the Miniature and Standards. (Toys are 9" - 12" for male and female) (Miniature males 12" - 15", and Miniature females 11" - 14") (Standard males are 15" - 19", Standard females are 14" - 18")
