In Memory of Cathy

Brown County

October 1992
      Cathy and I embarked on our usual October ride to Brown County, IN.  Little did we ever imagine that it was to be our last after more than 20 years of camping as bunkmates. We had no sooner set up camp as always when Cathy didn't feel well. Never a complainer, she rode as always. It wasn't until several days later when Ace pulled a tendon that Cathy agreed to pack up for home. It was our last ride together.........on this earth.

 WITHOUT ME

When the trailride starts without me,
And I'm not there to see;
If the sun should rise and find your eyes,
All filled with tears for me;

I wish so much you wouldn't cry,
For I know how much you care,
While thinking of the many miles,
We didn't get to share.

I know how much you miss me,
As much as I miss you,
And each time you ride and think of me,
I'm in your heart and riding anew.

But tomorrow must start without me,
And please try to understand,
That an angel came and called my name,
and took me by the hand.

And said other pastures were ready,
In heaven far above,
And that I'd have to leave behind,
All people and things I dearly love.

So when you hear a bird's sweet song
Or a distant gentle neigh
Then think of me and know
We'll ride together again someday.

No more trails paved with sickness,
Suffering or other worldly sorrows…
Instead health, love, and happiness
And miles of many tomorrows.

So when another day begins without me,
Don't feel we're far apart,
For every time you think of me
I ride deep within your heart.
