Wolf Creek

Wolf Creek has a horse campground which is located on Lake Shelbyville. The lake was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers over 30 years ago. It now offers all kinds of outdoor recreation. Luckily, it includes miles of equestrian trails.

The horse campground in the park has 18 camping sites, all with hitching posts. Out of these, 4 have electric. There is also an additional handicap site accessable with electric. There is only one water spigot, and one must bring your own hose if you wish to bathe your horses. There are 2 male and 2 female vault toilets. You can find more, plus showers, at the main campground which is just "around the bend" from the horse campground.

The horse campground is located next to the beginning of a very nice 15 mile scenic trail.
This is the main trail for the park with many outlaw trails that have been made by riders over the last two decades. At about the halfway mark there is another set of his 'n' hers vault toilets. The main trail itself winds through woods above the lake, and at one point you can ride down to a beach to water horses or take a break. Be careful, though; the sand is soft and the water gets deep quickly. There is also a scenic lookout just south of beach with a picnic table to serve as a very nice place for a snack.

If you choose to meander the trails out on the points and back, you can enjoy a flat, shaded ride. For the adventuresome, the outlaw trails provide small, hilly trails good for legging up you horse. This year, the lake is down giving way to some very fun trails which wind in and out of the coves just above the water's edge. A rider has to look closely for these trails or they're easily overlooked. In my opinion, the variety of trails keeps horse and rider entertained!

I believe one of the most convenient things about riding Wolf Creek is the fact that one can ride the points or choose to enjoy the cut-offs and yet get back to camp in only a matter of 20 minutes or so. By cutting through the flat open grassy fields, you can easily ride out the better part of a day and then make a quick return back to your trailer.

For those of us who reside among the fields of corn and soybeans, Wolf Creek is a close and shady place to enjoy.
