This is the time of the year that the Texas Bluebells are blooming. Don't confuse these with bluebonnets. They are far more elegant and far less numerous. "Young girls picked them, everyone!"   They are annuals and must be left to seed out to produce the next year's show. You mainly see them in places inaccessible to the public now.

Their preferred habitat is open prairie, along a runoff or area where water seeps for a long time. Julie and I drove out in the pasture to make these pictures yesterday, 7/08/03.



Here is evidence of evolution at work. We found several solid white bluebells mixed in with the more common ones. As you can see, the colors of each plant vary from pale blue to deep purple.

These are not tiny flowers, as you can see here.
They grow much taller than most summer wildflowers.

I'm never happier than when I'm out in Mother Nature's flower garden!
