Adopt a Friend is a public service website seeking to unite individuals wishing to provide loving homes with animals who have been turned over to rescue groups. There is a saying, "He who saves a life, saves a world." Rescue horses often make especially loyal companions, once they have been fully rehabilitated. Most legitimate rescue groups initially house rescued equines with foster families, where their temperaments, level of training and any special medical needs can be evaluated. Foster families can often tell would be adopters what level of experience is required to handle a particular horse and whether the horse has any special needs. If you are an individual or represent an organization engaged in equine rescue, we may require references before we list you on our site.

Note, we are not able to personally visit the facilities listed on these pages. If you have reason to believe that any of the organizations or individuals appearing on the Adopt a Friend website in any way neglect or abuse the animals they take in or are using any of these animals as breeding stock, please let us know. Take care when turning a horse over to or adopting a horse from anyone claiming to be part of a rescue organization. Many unscrupulous horse traders pose as rescue operations in order to secure free horses which they can turn around and sell for a profit, sometimes to slaughter houses. Legitimate rescue groups generally require adoptive families to go through a thorough screening process, which often includes a home visit to see where the horse will be kept. If a so-called rescue operation asks you for nothing more than your credit card number, beware!
